Former Delta Gov, James Ibori To Complete His Prison Term in Nigeria

Former Governor of Delta state, James Ibori, who has six more months to serve in a London prison, may possibly complete his sentence in Nigeria.
Ibori was in 2012, sentenced to thirteen years in jail by a London Judge for stealing at least $250 million of public funds within the period he served as governor of the wealthy Delta state.
During his sentencing in April 2012, Justice Nicholas Pitts had considered the fact that since the prison calender is different from the normal calender, Ibori was to spend half of the jail term which is six and half years.
Pitts had also deducted the 645 days Ibori spent in detention facilities both in Dubai and UK- which resulted in the four and half years jail sentence handed to him.
He is expected to be among the Nigerians in United Kingdom prisons, whom would be repatriated to complete their jail term in Nigeria.
The Nation reports that this disclosure was made by a senior official of the federal government.
The development is as a result of a recently signed agreement between the federal government and the UK government.
The British government was also reported to have pledged to give Nigeria one million pounds to aid in the comprehensive reformation of Nigerian prisons to ease the stress of the inmates.
Jeremy Wright, the United Kingdom Minister of Justice, reportedly revealed this on Wednesday, when he led the UK team to visit the Minister of Interior, Lt Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau (rtd).
The sole purpose of the meeting was to finalise the process of a mutual exchange of prisoners between Nigeria and the UK.
During the meeting, Wright informed the minister there is need for the state of prisons in Nigeria to be improved and be made humane and more accommodating.

OBJ At 79: ‘Many generations will remain grateful to Obasanjo’ – Buhari

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo will be 79 years old on Saturday, March 5, 2016, and congratulatory messages obviously have started pouring in.

One of such is from incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari, who said that Obasanjo “has contributed immensely to the institutionalization of democracy in Nigeria and Africa through his personal sacrifice, extensive local and international networks, and God-given wisdom.”

Buhari stated that many generations would be grateful to the former president for the work he has done with several countries and governments of African nations.
A statement was released to this effect on Friday by the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina who said: “President Buhari believes that Chief Obasanjo’s place in global history is assured for successfully handing over power to a civilian government in 1979 after serving as a military Head of State, and returning to power in 1999 through elections to stabilize the polity, during which he most remarkably negotiated a debt relief for Nigeria.”
“The President warmly commends Chief Obasanjo’s vision and commitment to the growth of Nigeria and Africa, which translated into a historical growth rate of 6 percent for the Nigerian economy after a long period of slow growth, and also created a rippling effect that buoyed other African economies.”
“As he turns 79, the President avers that the former president’s regular shuttles across Nigeria and Africa to counsel on economic, social and political issues, and his willingness to head election monitoring teams that have heralded smooth transitions in many countries are legacies which generations will remain grateful.”
“President Buhari prays that the Almighty God will grant the Balogun of the Owu lineage, who is also the Ekerin Balogun of the Egba clan, long life and strength to continue his service to humanity.”
