Boko Haram insurgents have reportedly attacked and taken over Askira town in Borno.
Fleeing residents told reporters in Maiduguri on Tuesday, January 13 that, the insurgents stormed the town in a convoy of Toyota Hilux vehicles and motorcycles at about 3:35pm on Monday, January 12.
According to an eyewitness, Yusuf Mohammed, the terrorists who were armed with explosive devices and petrol-bombs, touched several public buildings including a secondary school, the divisional police station and telecoms mast.
Mohammed said; "As we were about to depart the motor park yesterday (Monday) afternoon, we saw some insurgents chanting Allahu Akbar (God is great) in Arabic.”
“They burnt down a school in the town. They did not stop there they proceeded to the police station and a health centre and threw IEDs at the buildings.”The residents of Askira reportedly fled into the bush and nearby communities, as the terrorists began attacking the town.
Number of casualty is yet to be ascertained.
