Bird Flu Detected In Rivers State


Rivers state government has confirmed the discovery of Avian Influenza, also known as bird flu in the state.

The state Commissioner of Agriculture, Emma Chinda said the disease was confirmed after a thorough test was carried out on a bird which was showing signs last week.
He said this at a media briefing in Port Harcourt, and also revealed that the test on the bird was carried out by the National Vetinary Institute, Jos, Plateau state.

He said following the result, plans are being carried out to expand test on the poultry farm, to help check the spread of the disease.

According to him;“The government of Rivers State has taken measure to contain the presence of the disease from its present location and we have taken steps which include quarantine of the farm, depopulation of the remaining birds and decontamination of the premises in line with the best standard procedures”.
