When A Man Loves A Woman reached number one in the US when it was released in 1966.
It went on to become an international hit, reaching number four in the UK that same year.
In 1987 it was used in a Levi's advert and again hit the charts, rising to number two.
The song found new life once more in 1991 when Michael Bolton covered it.
Before he found fame, Sledge was a hospital orderly in Sheffield, Alabama, in the 1960s and would sing in southern US states at weekends.
He failed to match the success of his first song but his concerts became popular all over the world.
He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.
He's survived by a wife and 12 children.
May his soul RIP!
