Despite $5bn loss, Aliko Dangote remains No.1 as Forbes releases its Africa’s 50 richest list


Leading American business magazine Forbes has released its 2015 list of Africa’s 50 richest people. Retaining his spot as Africa’s richest man is business tycoon, Aliko Dangote.  The CEO of Dangote group became the richest man in 2010 after he surpassed Saudi-Ethiopian billionaire, Mohammed Hussein Al Amoudi by over $2.6 billion. 

Also on the list are: oil tycoon Folorunsho Alakija who came in at no. 13 with $1.7 billion; Chairman of Forte oil, Femi Otedola, who ranked 16 with $1.6 billion and Tony Elumelu, who came in at no. 31 with $700 million.

According to the magazine, South African tycoons overtook Nigerians as a result of the country’s economic weakness, nevertheless Dangote maintained his position as no. 1 with a net worth of $16.7 billion.

Dangote, who has shown interest in buying football club, Arsenal, recently resigned from Dangote Flour Mills after his South African investors threatened to pull out.
