Former Borno Governor, Ali Modu-Sheriff named PDP Chairman

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Tuesday named onetime Governor of Borno State, Ali Modu Sheriff as its new chairman.
Addressing newsmen at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja, spokesman of the party, Olisa Metuh said all organs of the party, including, the national caucus, PDP Governors’ Forum and the National Assembly caucuses agreed on the selection of Sheriff.
Metuh noted that the decision would be communicated to the Board of Trustees and subsequently, the National Executive Committee, NEC, for ratification before a formal announcement would be made.
Sheriff was picked at the National Executive Committee, NEC, meeting held in Abuja.
Sheriff is replacing former Chairman, Ahmadu Mu’azu, who resigned shortly after the party lost the last Presidential election.
The former Senator from Borno State, prior to being named the new Chairman of Nigeria’s largest opposition party, has been a controversial figure amid allegation that he funded and sponsored the Boko Haram insurgent group, an allegation he has since refuted.
