CAN wants ex-President Jonathan prosecuted for corruption

The Christian Association of Nigeria, Lagos State chapter, has called for the prosecution of former President Goodluck Jonathan for corruption.
The Chairman of Lagos CAN, Apostle Alexander Bamgbola, spoke in Lagos on Saturday on the sideline of an interdenominational service.
While fielding questions from journalists, Bamgbola applauded the ongoing war against corruption in the country, adding that nobody should be spared.
When asked about the stance of the group on the call for the prosecution of Jonathan, he said, “What is wrong with it? A former President of Peru (Alberto Fujimori) was jailed. Also, a popular prime minister of Israel (Ehud Olmert) was jailed. If a nation puts you in a position of trust and you betray that trust, you should go to jail no matter who you are. I have no sympathy for anybody. Just make sure you get it right, and we get the facts right as well.”
He lamented the corruption in the country, urging the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration to go after the looters and “put them where they belong, so that we may have peace in this nation.”

Lagos police arrest ‘mad man’ with bank tellers, 22 ATM cards

Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, RRS, of the Lagos State Police Command attached to the Victoria Island area of Lagos State, have arrested a suspected mad man, one Lanrewaju Jaiyeola, with two mobile phones, 22 Automated Teller Machine, ATM cards, several bank tellers of recent bank transactions and a power bank.
The 39-year-old suspect, who according to the police had been on their watch-list for about two weeks, was arrested by the RRS operatives with a knapsack on Ozumba Mbadiwe Road.
The police said they were not convinced that Jaiyeola was actually mad, because initially, he was well-spoken, later on, he started talking unreasonably. They however, took him to their base in Alausa, Ikeja.
The police discovered that eight of the credit cards which had different names and banks, were still valid.
One of the officials who didn’t want his name mentioned, told The Punch that when they noticed him, he appeared like a mentally unstable person.
“When we invited him for interrogation, he responded normal to all our enquiries and a few minutes into the interrogation, he started straying from the normal course of our enquiries and was not making sense at all,” he disclosed.
The official added that his behaviour raised further suspicion and they decided to search the knapsack he was arrested with.

He said, “Inside the backpack, we found several bank tellers of recent bank transactions, 22 ATM cards, a power bank, lots of invoices hidden in pieces of papers, one Nokia phone and a BlackBerry.”
A policeman at their base in Alausa, Ikeja, said, “The suspect made statements suggestive of somebody disguising as a mad man to perpetrate crime.
According to the unidentified police officer, “Initially, we noticed that he was mentally balanced because he was answering the questions posed to him adequately. But all of a sudden, he started sounding incoherent and illogical again.
“While interrogating him, he threatened the Investigating Police Officer, IPO, saying, ‘I will make life unbearable for you if you don’t let me go. So it was at this point we realised that possibly he might be enjoying the patronage of some highly-placed people whom we believe he was working for.”
Confirming the arrest, the RRS Commander, Olatunji Disu, said, “Jaiyeola has been transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, Ikeja for detention and further investigation.”

However, two other suicide bombers walked into the middle of hundreds of people lining up for food before they blew themselves up in an attack that killed 58 and wounded about 78 others, reported the Associated Press (AP) on Thursday, February 11, 2016.
It was one of the most ruthless attacks launched by Boko Haram in recent months
This disclosure was brought to light by a Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) fighter, Modu Awami, while interrogating the teenager.
According to him, the third would-be bomber, 14-year-old, said she was afraid because she knew detonating the vest will lead to the killing of many people.
“She said she was scared because she knew she would kill people. But she was also frightened of going against the instructions of the men who brought her to the camp.”
“She confessed to our security operatives that she was worried if she went ahead and carried out the attack that she might kill her own father, who she knew was in the camp,” he told the AP on Thursday.
The girl tried to persuade her companions to abandon the mission, he said, “but she said she could not convince the two others to change their minds.”
Confirming the report, a rescue official said the girl gave officials information about other planned bombings.

Mosquitoes carrying Zika virus are in Nigeria, active and flying around - Health Minister

Nigerians have been warned to make use of mosquito nets, owing to the presence of mosquitoes carrying Zika virus in the country.
The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, disclosed this on Thursday, during a press briefing in Abuja, where he explained that the mosquitoes were active and flying around.
The Minister added that the Zika-carrying mosquitoes usually bite during the day and early morning.
Professor Adewole urged Nigerians to remain calm, vigilant and also to report any suspected case of an acute febrile illness in pregnant women, in particular, to any nearest health facility.
“Nigerian scientists working in Western Nigeria in 1954 discovered Zika virus in Nigeria. Further studies in the years 1975 to 1979 showed that 40 per cent of Nigeria adults and 25 per cent of Nigerian children have antibodies to Zika virus, meaning they are protected against this virus.”
“Despite the fact that some Nigerians are immune to the Zika virus infection as demonstrated by previous studies, it is important and advisable that Nigerians should be careful and protect themselves from mosquito bites. There is no vaccine for Zika virus, and no cure other than rest, plenty of fluids and perhaps over-the-counter medication to reduce fevers, aches and pains as previously mentioned.”
This, therefore, means that prevention is most effective means of preventing transmission. “I advise all Nigerians, particularly pregnant women, to avoid travelling to countries infected by this virus in these periods. If however, you are to visit any country where Zika virus is now being actively transmitted, you are advised to protect yourselves from mosquito bites.”
“Pregnant women considering travel to affected areas may wish to consult their health-care provider prior to travel and after return. They should also practice personal and household steps to prevent mosquito, including putting mosquito repellant on their clothes and skin, wear long sleeves and pants, and sleep underneath mosquito nets at night, where possible.”
