Jonathan and Buhari are both problematic candidates – Wole Soyinka

Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka, has taken a swipe on the two frontline candidates in the March 28 presidential election, President Goodluck Jonathan of PDP and Gen. Muhammadu Buhari of APC, describing them as ‘problematic flagbearers.’

He said this in an interview with BBC on Monday, and that the political parties should have come up with far better options than the two leading candidates.

“There is a huge albatross hanging (around) the necks of the two main candidates. I can understand the dilemma which many voters have. One contender is troubled by the present, the other by the past.”

Soyinka also decried the lack of fair play in the election, saying the spirit of “let’s have a fair war” was not yet deep enough.

He faulted Jonathan for the failure to rescue the more than 200 schoolgirls abducted from Chibok in April 2014.

“What happened was a clear failure of leadership – a slow reaction, an inadequate reaction and response,” Soyinka told the BBC.

 “Buhari and his partner, the late Gen. Tunde Idiagbon, after (former military head of state) Sani Abacha, I think they represented the most brutal face of military dictatorship. There is no question about that,” Soyinka said.

“But the environment changes, circumstances change and… I look at the possibility of a genuine internal transformation in some individuals. I’ve been disappointed before and we must always be ready to be disappointed again,” he added.

Jonathan Shifted The Elections Because He's Afraid Of Buhari’s Growing Popularity - New York Times

The New York Times has described the postponement of the elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission, hs being orchestrated by President Goodluck Jonathan to infuriate the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

The US-based newspaper in its editorial of Monday, February 16, stated that Jonathan was scared-stiff of Buhari’s surging popularity, and as such, was forced to postpone the polls, in order to restrategize and launch fresh campaigns.

In the editorial titled: “Nigeria’s Miserable Choices”, the publication said: “Any argument to delay the vote might be more credible if President Goodluck Jonathan’s government had not spent much of the past year playing down the threat posed by the militants and if there were a reasonable expectation that the country’s weak military has the ability to improve security in a matter of weeks.”

“It appears more likely that Mr. Jonathan grew alarmed by the surging appeal of Muhammadu Buhari, a former military ruler who has vowed to crack down on Boko Haram. By dragging out the race, Jonathan stands to deplete his rival’s campaign coffers while he continues to use state funds and institutions to bankroll his own.”

The New York Times added that INEC’s excuse for the election postponement would have been taken in good faith if Jonathan had been tackling insecurity effectively since he became president.

The editorial stated that President Jonathan’s popularity had waned to the point that Nigerians were not indisposed to the reality that a former military dictator could return as President.

“Beyond security matters, entrenched corruption and the government’s inability to diversify its economy as the price of oil, the country’s financial bedrock, has fallen and has also caused Nigerians to look for new leadership.”

“Nigeria, the most populous African nation, and a relatively young democracy, cannot afford an electoral crisis. That would only set back the faltering efforts to reassert government control in districts where Boko Haram is sowing terror.”

“The security forces may not be able to safeguard many districts on Election Day. But postponement is very likely to make the security threat worse.”

How 3 Arik Airline staff were caught stealing aviation fuel

The Ministry of Aviation arrested three Arik Air staff for stealing fuel from an aircraft, the aviation minister, Osita Chidoka said.

He revealed this via his official Facebook page that the trio of Blessing Dugbe, Samuel. Asuquo and Isaac Ajakaiye were arrested at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, during a security patrol operation on Sunday at about around 3am.

According to reports by Premium Times, the three were stealing Jet A1 fuel from Arik Air plane to be sold at cheaper rates to other operators.

According to the minister’s post: “A development that has capacity, to threaten safety and security of airplanes. Meanwhile, the three (3) suspects were handed over to the Crime Investigation Bureau (CIB), AVSEC MMIA for further action.”

He said, “In the aviation industry’s fight against corruption and security breaches, other chief security officers and heads of aviation security have been alerted and directed to intensify patrol and surveillance operations at various airports across Nigeria.”

“Considering the magnitude of the crime to the security and safety of airplanes, the chief security officer of the Lagos airport has been asked to ensure that the suspects are handed over to the airport police for adequate prosecution.”

This is not the first time that Arik staff are accused of theft. Passengers have often lamented the loss of one H or the other aboard the airline’s flights.

Why some Nigerian Celebs have identified with one party or the other, publicly support or endorse presidential candidate of their choice, drummer girl, Ara seems to be neutral. She would rather sit on the fence.

Amber Rose, who used to date Kim Kardashian‘s current husband Kanye West, got candid in a recent radio interview, expressing her thoughts on Kylie Jenner.

Khloe went on to clarify to one follower that she has no problem with Rose’s work as a stripper, but resents her telling her sister she should be in bed by 7 p.m. when she had less conservative teenage years.

Obasanjo Spat In Our Faces - PDP Releases Statement

The Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organisation (PDPPCO) on Monday reacted to the exit of Olusegun Obasanjo, a former president and former chairman of the party’s board of trustees, from the party, saying while he was free to leave, he did not have to spit in their faces by publicly tearing up the party's card.

A statement issued by Femi Fani-Kayode, director of media and publicity of PDPPCO, read: “Watching our party membership card being torn up whilst President Obasanjo was standing there and smiling was painful and tragic. 

“This is a party which he helped to build and on whose platform he was elected president for eight good years. The truth is that President Obasanjo is far better and far bigger than that. Such behaviour is provocative and unacceptable. 

“He is free to leave the party but does he have to spit in our faces by tearing up our party card in public and before the television cameras? 

“This knee-jerk reaction is most unlike President Obasanjo and it is very insulting. It is clear that he has burnt all the bridges and that he has left us forever. “On a personal note, I feel saddened by this but the truth is that many in our party have heaved a huge sigh of relief. Many of us love President Obasanjo and we shall continue to do so regardless of whether he is in our party or not, but tearing up that party card was too much to bear. 

“It spoke volumes and it was indicative of the deep hatred and contempt that he has for us and our cause. It reminded me of the biblical passage in which King Saul rejected David and then planned to stop him from ascending to the throne by attempting to kill and destroy him. Thankfully the Lord was with David and not only did he deliver him from Saul, he also crowned him King.”

OBJ finally dumps PDP, rips apart membership card (See Photos)

After months of heavily criticizing President Goodluck Jonathan, former president Olusegun Obasanjo, may have finally dumped the ruling party, Peoples Democratic Party(PDP).

Obasanjo held a press conference in the presence of PDP members from ward 11 in Abeokuta North local government, on Monday, February 16, to state that he is no longer interested in the PDP.

The former President while addressing members of the PDP at his mansion in Abeokuta, said he would prefer to be an elder statesman.

During the conference, Obasanjo was assisted in ripping apart his PDP membership card but he is, however, yet to announce what political party he intends to pitch tent with.

Obasanjo is a founding member of the PDP and the first democratically elected president of the party.

In his two terms as president, he was elected twice on the platform of the party.

Terrible! Man rapes four-year-old girl in Lagos

One Kingsley Churchill, 25 year old man, has been brought before a Magistrate Court sitting in Ebute Meta over the alleged rape of a four year old girl.

It was learnt that the accused forcefully had his way on the 13 year old in her parents’ house on Adeshokan Street, Ayobo, Lagos State on the 24th of January this year.

According to reports, the accused, before engaging in the evil act first inserted his fingers into the girl’s private part.

When the incident was discovered by the parents, they reported to the police who immediately arrested the accused. It was gathered that Churchill was arraigned on one count charge of sexual assault.

Etim Nkankuk, the police prosecutor, said the crime is punishable under Section 259 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.

Churchill however pleaded pleaded not guilty to the charge, while J. AAdewunmi, the defence counsel in liberal terms asked the court to grant the accused bail. He was granted bail with the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties in like sum by Chief Magistrate, A.O. Isaac, the presiding judge.

Bricklayer Kills Neighbor Over Generator Fumes

A 29-year-old bricklayer, Ibrahim Tijani, has hacked to death his neighbour, Bashorun Okanla, for complaining about fumes emanating from his generator.

The incident happened in the Okun Ajah, Ogombo area of Lagos State.

the suspect, an indigene of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, and the deceased lived in an uncompleted building.

According to PUNCH Metron, on the fateful day, Tijani was said to have turned on his generator around 11am, while the fumes escaped into the room of the 57-year-old carpenter.

Okanla, who was married with kids, was said to have cautioned Tijani and later, an argument started between the which degenerated into a fight and the suspect picked a cutlass from his room and cut the victim in the hand and leg.

He was rushed to a hospital in the area where he reportedly gave up the ghost.

A source, who pleaded anonymity said;

“It was on February 8, 2015 around 11am. The suspect and the deceased were neighbours. They both lived in an uncompleted building, which I learnt was owned by a Nigerian based in the USA.

Tijani turned on his generator and the fumes escaped into the room of Okanla, who dashed out and asked him to take away the generator from the place, but he refused. That was how they began fighting and dragged themselves into the bush.The man then picked a sharp cutlass and cut the deceased in the hand and leg and ran away.” 

It was learnt that Tijani, when interrogated by the police, confessed to the crime, adding that he had had a misunderstanding with the deceased before the incident.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Nwosu, said the police had started investigation into the case.
