Presidency Announces Date For Swearing In Ministers

In a statement released by the Special Adviser to the President (Media & Publicity), Femi Adesina, the Presidency announced that new ministers will be sworn in on Wednesday, November 11, 2015.

The swearing-in ceremony which will begin promptly at 10:00 AM will allow the minister-designates to bring just two guests. The ministers are expected to confirmed the Senate on Monday, before their swearing in on Wednesday.

After their confirmation on Monday, President Buhari will be swearing in of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and five others as National Commissioners of INEC.

'Little girls who want to be governor now have a role model' - Atiku Abubakar

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has commended Senator Aisha Alhassan on her doggedness and passion.

Alhassan was recently declared the winner of the Taraba governorship election after the tribunal nullified the election of Governor Darius Ishaku.

The court ordered governor-elect paid a courtesy visit to the former Vice President over the weekend, and he expressed his pride at her feat.

Atiku wrote on his Facebook page that Alhassan’s accomplishment has given hope to young women who aspire to become governors.

“Now every little girl who ever wanted to be governor in Nigeria has a role model. Congratulations Aisha.

I’m proud to have supported Aisha’s race for governor. She has shown that being a woman is not a disadvantage.”

Barack Obama, Aliko Dangote Are The Only Black Men In Forbes 100 Most Powerful People

Forbes has released the 2015 list for its annual Most Powerful People In The World series.

The richest man in Africa, Aliko Dangote, was the only Nigerian on the list, ranked at number 71.

Aliko Dangote was the only black man named in the list, alongside USA president Barack Obama.

The top 10 was filled with Heads of State, including Russia’s Vladimir Putin at number 1, Germany’sAngela Merkel at 2, and Barack Obama at 3rd.

The youngest people on the list were Facebook CEO, 31-year old Mark Zuckerberg, who was ranked 19th, and 32-year old leader of North Korea, Kim Jong-Un who was ranked 46th.

SCHOOLS ATTENDED AND ACTIVITIES AS A STUDENT
1. Muhammed Nya Primary School, Jalingo

(first set to do 4½ years in Secondary School because of the change of commencement of school year from January to September.

5. Joined Students politics in ABU Main Campus in 1977 (end) when I was a little over 18 years.

Please Note that the position of Vice President had always gone to women un-opposed until (for the first time) in 1978 when three of us contested for it, one female (Elizabeth (Lizzy) Wambebe then an undergraduate studying Fine Arts and Lead Vocalist of ABU JAZZ Club) and for the first time too, a male undergraduate. I was a prelim student then. I won the election and became the Vice President and the only female in the SUG Exco of that year (1978 – 1979).
The then President was Mal. Abdulhameed Imam, Secretary General was Comrade Isa Bala Lawal while Assistant Secretary General was Comrade AbdulRahman Black of blessed memory. All members of Exco of that year except I were undergraduates.
During our tenure, there was a student crisis as a result of which some of the Exco members including the President were indicted and expelled from the University.
I then became the Acting President and completed the Tenure as such (Acting President of the ABU Main Campus SUG).
7. During my days as an SBS ABU Student and Vice President/Acting President SUG Main Campus, I met my first husband and father of my three children, Professor Ango Abdullahi who was then the Deputy Vice Chancellor, ABU Zaria. He always represented the then Vice Chancellor Prof. O. O. Akinkugbe at meetings with the SUG Exco. I married Prof. Ango Abdullahi in September 1979 after completing my SBS when he was still the Deputy Vice Chancellor. He became Vice Chancellor three months after our marriage, that is, in December 1979.
8. Due to my new status as a wife and mother, I switched over from being a Science Student to Arts (after my first baby (girl) in 1980) when I enrolled to read Diploma in Law (1980) at ABU Zaria. I had to start from Diploma because of my pure science background. I did not have the required Arts subjects to enroll for LLB.
9. I proceeded to read LLB at same ABU from October 1982 to June 1985. I had my second child (son) in 1983.
10. I went to the Nigerian Law School Lagos 1985 – 1986
11. Called to the Nigerian Bar in 1986.
12. Did my NYSC 1986 – 1987.

WORKING CAREER
14. Started work as a Magistrate Grade II in April 1988 in the Kaduna State Judiciary.
15. Went for the Technical Aid Corps Programme of the Federal Ministry Of Foreign Affairs (on Secondment) to the Republic of Fiji from 1990 – 1992. I was admitted to the Fijian Bar and enrolled as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of Fiji in 1991.
16. While I was in Fiji, my services were transferred from Kaduna State Judiciary to FCT Judiciary in 1991 as Magistrate Grade I.
17. I assumed duty at FCT Judiciary in 1992 when I returned from Fiji. At the time l assumed duty I was the only female Magistrate in the FCT.
18. I rose through the ranks and became the first female Chief Magistrate in the FCT in 1996.
19. I was then moved to Judicial Administration as the first female Deputy Chief Registrar and Director Litigation, High Court of the FCT Abuja in 1997.
20. Was appointed the first female Attorney General of my State (Taraba) in 1997.
21. Returned to FCT Judiciary after the handing over to a Democratically elected Government in May 1999 and continued in my office as Director Litigation.
22. Was appointed the First female Secretary of the FCT Judicial Service Committee in November, 2002.
23. Was appointed the first female Chief Registrar of the High Court of the FCT in December 2003.
24. I voluntarily retired from the FCT Judiciary as Chief Registrar on the 31st of December, 2009.

POLITICAL CAREER
25. My family has always been a political family even before the time of my birth. My father joined politics (NCNC) when he was a student in Barewa College Zaria. He later joined NPC in the first Republic.
He was one of the conveners of NPC in Muri Division and was the first NPC Secretary of Muri Division. He contested election under NPC in 1959 for the House of Representatives in one of the 3 Muri Division Constituencies. He was re-elected for second term after 4 years but could not finish the term because of the coup in 1966.
He was Chairman of NPN, Gongola State in the Second Republic, also Chairman NRC Taraba State at one time and Chairman of the Convening Committee of PDP in Taraba State in 1998. He retired
from active politics at the age of 80 years as a State Ex-Officio Member of NEC of PDP.
My Elder Brother of the same parents Senator A. A. Ibrahim (Jnr) was a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for 8 years (1999 – 2007) representing Taraba Central Zone.
I joined the PDP as a member in the year 2005 while still working in the Judiciary but I was NOT politically active.
26. I started active politics in October 2010 and immediately went to contest for the Senatorial seat of my Zone.
27. By the Grace of God, I won the election and was sworn in as Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on 6th June, 2011, the day the 7th Senate was inaugurated.

Popular Nollywood actor, Chiwetalu Agu, often acts the role of a wicked man in movies. And his depictions are so real that many fans believe that is his real character. In this chat with Showtime Celebrity, he explains that the negative reaction of fans towards his wicked roles is what actually led him into acting comic roles. Excerpts…

You seem to have an affinity for comedies; why is that?

I wouldn’t call it affinity. Years ago, I found out that most of the scripts that were brought to me didn’t have comic relief; I was always given roles of a wicked man and I got to understand that most of my fans were not pleased with it. Some of them felt it was something real, and the consequence was that whenever I stepped out in public, I was caught in embarrassing situations. I then decided to be infusing comic relief even when I’m playing wicked characters because I’m a veteran  screen writer. In the early 80s, we were operating in NTA Enugu, which was formerly Anambra Television Channel 50, so the talent is there, and I combined it with the wicked roles they were giving me. The result is that when you are watching me play a wicked role, you will still have cause to laugh, and ease your tension. In fact, I have achieved a lot by doing that.

Can you share instances when fans reacted to you with the belief that you’re a wicked man?

They have done daring things. Some of their actions look like attacks, but with my experience as an entertainer, I will say I saw all that coming, so I was able to manage all of them very well. But one day, while I was on Onitsha ‘Head Bridge’ on my way to  Asaba, there was this traffic snarl that made us come out of the car. One fan came to hail me and slap me on the shoulder in the course of appraising my unique style of acting. Some other persons cautioned him, and he fired back by saying, ‘Don’t you know this man is my all-in-all? He makes me happy; whenever I’m not happy, I just slot in his movie, and I become happy.’ That was an embarrassing incident, but I saw it coming because that was the period I was playing evil diabolical roles. However, I also touch lives, because sometimes when we shoot movies, it’s like we’re telling some people’s life story. You know, talking about what happens in various families where wicked uncles deal with their nephews and things like that. But like I said earlier, I thank God that I have found a way of getting people to laugh at the same time they watch me play wicked roles.

Recently, a picture of you grabbing the boobs of an actress, Anita Joseph, on a movie set went viral; what really happened?

They are my daughters. It was a story, and we were playing our roles. Maybe you didn’t have time to watch that movie to understand what was going on. The main character in that movie was Ini Edo who was rascally, and more of a tom-boy. If she fought with my daughters, she would defeat them, so I did everything to prepare strong grounds for them to overpower her, but it wasn’t possible. So I said since that failed, let’s look for another way to prepare them to live their lives, so that any suitor who sees them will fall in love and marry them. That way, they will be useful since they failed in fighting a common enemy. 

The scene that went viral was where I was dressing them up for a burial ceremony that was coming up where I expected men to see them, and to find them attractive enough to take as wives. You know women’s bust plays a very big role in attracting any man who comes as a suitor, but people who wanted sensation made the picture go viral to sell their media. If I tell you now that I help some children in the motherless baby’s home, it may not be as sensational as when they say that I raped a minor.

But how does your wife react to scenes like that?

If I have up to one million fans, my wife will be number one. The greatest joy she derives is watching me act; no matter how negative the role is, because she is the only person that knows me better than anyone else since we live together. She knows how gentle and wonderful I am. She also knows how philanthropic I am because I always love to help humanity. So when she sees me in those kinds of scenes, she knows I’m just acting. Each time I churn out a catch-phrase, byline or slogan, she laughs so hard that even the person who is one mile away will hear the sound. She doesn’t find anything I do in films embarrassing at all; the reverse is the case.

• You mean she even tells you to do it better if she feels it’s not good enough?

Yes, she chips in her own advice on how to make my acting more comical. She knows I’m a very strong comic character; comedy is in my nature, and that is the first thing that makes her happy that I’m her husband. There are some husbands that always have hard countenances, and their wives fear them, but I’m not like that. As far as I’m concerned, she is my biggest fan.

Earlier this year, in an interview with Encomium Magazine, Nigerian-British born actor, Kalu Ikeagwu was asked why he was yet to settle down.

Buhari's wife assures Nigerians-You are in safe hands with my husband's govt

Aisha Buhari, the wife of the president, says Nigerians should expect to feel secure and safe in the administration of her husband, President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to Mrs Buhari, her husband’s government would enhance ‘unity, love and security’ in the country.

“The government of my husband is a government of unity, love and security. Nigerians are in safe hands in my husband’s government.”

Furthermore, the president’s wife, promised that Buhari would safeguard the future of Nigerians through good governance.

She stated this in Enugu, on Thursday, when she inaugurated a health initiative, which featured screening tests for cervical cancer, eye problems, diabetes, high blood pressure and other ailments.

“This health screening exercise will be enjoyed by not less than 2,000 women from virtually all the 17 Local Government Areas of the state.

“It would enable women ascertain their health statuses at no cost. It would promote good health, particularly among the rural women and the underprivileged.”

Heartbreaking! Man recounts how hospital negligence led to death of wife, newborn baby

When the water of pregnant Omowunmi Shonuga broke, her husband, Ayobanji, was at alert on the fateful Thursday morning to rush her down to the hospital.

According to The Punch, the 33-year-old expectant father was happy that his second child is on its way. He packed all the necessary baby’s things at about 5am and drove her 30-year-old wife down to the Rauf Aregbesola Health Centre in Egbeda Alimosho local government area of Lagos.

When he got to the gate of the health centre, he found the gates were locked. Shonuga said:

“We got to the hospital around 5 am to meet the hospitals locked. I horned and horned, nobody came out. After a while a woman came out and said there was no doctor to attend to me, that I should take her to the Igando General Hospital.

“I said it was impossible for a doctor not to be on duty in a hospital as big as this. She ignored any other enquiry I was trying to make. As I got back to my car, I saw that my wife had delivered the baby and that she was in a pool of blood and she was also bleeding. It was when I started shouting, ‘Blood! Blood! Baby’ that two nurses rushed out from the hospital.”

“After they opened the gate, I drove in. One of the attendants picked the baby, but the nurses refused to touch my wife. I asked for a stretcher to take her in, they said they didn’t have. I asked for an ambulance to take her away from there, they said they were not with the keys.

I had to carry her upstairs with no help from them because they didn’t want to touch her. They said there was no doctor to attend to her.”

After much persuasion from him, the nurses told him to go and buy some injections and drugs that would stop the bleeding while they began stitching a cut his wife had.

“She was shouting that the pain was too much while they were stitching her but they kept telling her to keep quiet. I knew something was wrong and told them to get a doctor. They said he was on his way. We cannot handle this case, take her to Igando’.

Shonuga said even with the stitches, her wife was still bleeding.

“ He looked at her eyeballs and said that she had lost a lot of blood and would need to be transfused but they could not do that at that moment.  I asked again for the ambulance so I could take her to Igando. They said they didn’t have the keys yet. It was just packed there doing nothing. It was then I asked after my baby. They kept quiet. Later, someone went out to check the room the baby was supposed to be and said the baby was no longer breathing.

“It was obvious that they abandoned the baby. I went in to carry my wife with the drip on her but insisted that they must give me a referral note and a nurse to go with me to Igando so that her case could be treated as an emergency.

They refused until their supervisor instructed them to go with me when she heard me shouting. It took another 25 minutes before they came with a note and one of the members of staff went with me,” Shonuga lamented.

When he got to Igando, she was rejected. Shonuga said the nurses told them to go to another hospital as there was no bed space to admit his dying wife.

“For another 45 minutes, we couldn’t get a bed. After I threw a tantrum that attracted some attention, they began running up and down and said they had created a bed space for her.

“They took her blood sample and insisted that they wouldn’t transfuse her till I had paid N20,000. We argued again that it was an emergency that they should go ahead but at this stage she was already losing consciousness. While they were trying to secure a drip for her, she died.”

Shonuga told The Punch that he buried his late wife and his newborn baby later that day. Omowunmi , a graduate of Accounting from the Lagos State University, died at the age of 30, leaving a three- year-old baby girl behind.

“The most painful thing for me is that she suffered so much before she died. She cried and bled on and on, but that did not even move them. There was no doctor on duty and they could not give me an ambulance to handle her case. I only took her there because that was where she had her antenatal and they knew her and her health history. If I had known I would have taken her to a private hospital,” the widower said.

When contacted, the medical officer, Alimosho local government, Dr. Micheal Ariyibi, said that the Ministry of Health had received a complaint and had begun an investigation into the case. The ministry, he said, would not hesitate to punish those involved in the unfortunate incident.
