President Buhari Appoints Amina Zakari INEC Chair As Jega Bows Out

President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Mrs Amina Bala Zakari as the acting chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) following the end of Prof Attahiru Jega’s tenure yesterday.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by the director of communications at the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Haruna Imrana.

According to the statement, the head of the civil service of the federation, Barr. Danladi Kifasi, who conveyed the appointment in a letter, said Mrs Zakari’s appointment took immediate effect (from yesterday, June 30, 2015) until the appointment of a substantive chairman.

Zakari is presently a national electoral commissioner at INEC.
In a related development, Jega, a professor of political economy, finally bowed out of office yesterday.

Jega, who concluded his five-year tenure yesterday, was appointed by President Goodluck Jonathan in June 2010 and oversaw the conduct of the 2011 and 2015 general elections.
