See excerpt from the interview after the cut...

Lately, you have developed a relationship with D'banj. What really informed it?

Honestly, it was another dream that came true because D’banj is one of the leading enterprising artistes in Nigeria, who has a multinational endorsement. Right now some people have developed hatred for him.

Who are these people you are referring to?

I don’t know them, but I am aware that some set of people have formed a fan page disparaging D’banj. It is a hatred fan page which I don’t think is ideal. But I salute the matured mind of D’banj for demonstrating his responsibility and maturity on the development. I love his spirit, to the extent tha he never reacted to any of the issues, but has remained focused. Just as myself, I struggled so hard alongside with my manager on the street. In fact, every member of my management is from the street and my joy now is that God has elevated us from the grass to grace. The fame has come and there are endorsements knocking on our doors often, even outside the country.

You are yet to reveal the motive behind your association with D'banj. Are you guys planning to form a group too counter the set of people you just mentioned?

No. We are of matured minds. My association with D’banj is to create good music and give our fans what they really want. We have to boost the confidence and also let our fans know what we have brought to the industry. At present, we have a lot of things coming up; we just did a collaboration of the remix of my music, “Double Wahala”. The video was shot in Los Angeles. The association is currently yielding results and it is encouraging. He is also coming up with a new video which everyone in the fold will be featured. So, we are really working hard to establish these projects."

Hear him; "This has been an annual show in the last six years. It is a franchise and it holds every Valentine’s Day in the UK regardless of the day it falls on.
‘It has been happening for the past six years and the venue has been booked long ago. The tickets have been on sale long before it was announced that elections would hold on that day.
‘Unfortunately there is nothing I can do about it because everything is ready and I have to go on with my show. The people talking about it apparently do not know that it is a franchise that has been on for about six years. I cannot cancel the show because of elections,’

How Has GEJ & Sambo's PhD Certificates Helped Nigeria? - Fashola

Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos state yesterday, hit back at those mocking Buhari's educational qualifications by stressing that President Goodluck Jonathan and his VP, Namadi Sambo's high academic qualification have not reflected in the policies they introduced since assuming office.

Fashola, who made the statement at APC rally held in Ikorodu, lamented that the country has failed to progress despite their high academic qualification.
“We prayed that if we have someone who has degree, he will be able to develop the country. And when the current president, a Ph.D holder, assumed office, we rejoiced that the country will improve. Rather than implement policies that would improve the standard of living of the citizens, we were having regression,”he said. “Also, his Vice-President is an architect but he cannot construct roads. But it is sad that a lawyer is the Commissioner for Works in Edo State and he has constructed several roads. In Ogun State, the Commissioner for Works is an architect and he has built several roads."

“So, let’s ask Sambo, the Vice President what has he done for the nation since he assumed office. All he (Sambo) could do was to inform the President that people are leaving Lagos because of tax regime. And I want everyone to ask the Vice President if the number of vehicles coming into Lagos has reduced.”

Hafsat Abiola, Funmi Iyanda, Tara Durotoye Writes Open Letter To President Jonathan

Tara Durotoye

Funmi Iyanda

Notable Nigerians including Funmi Iyanda, Hafsat Abiola-Costello, Tara Fela Durotoye amongst other members of World Economic Forum of Young Global Leaders, have written an open letter to President Goodluck Jonathan.

See the full text of the letter after the cut...

Dear president Jonathan,
As young global leaders we would like to express our deep concern about the recent events in Nigeria.
The massacre in Baga has been Boko Haram’s deadliest so far, despite reports of your brief visit to Maiduguri, you’ve publicly said nothing. More disturbing still is the fact that you would send a message to France condemning the killings there, yet seem unable to address the Nigerian people who look to you for leadership.
Unfortunately, it’s not the first time you’ve met calamity with insouciance. On 10 November 2014 a suicide bomber killed 47 people and injured 79 others. The following day, with barely a mention of this horrific incident targeting children, you launched your re-election campaign.
Despite the ease with which you move on, even you will remember the abduction of the schoolgirls in Chibok in April last year. It was 40 days before you addressed the country on that occasion. Nigerians waited, perplexed, as your government debated whether or not the abductions had even taken place. As a result, of all the girls captured, only 52 have secured their freedom – escaping on their own. The rest are still in captivity, still waiting to be rescued, months after being taken from their friends, family and community.
Could it be that your government also doubts that the Baga attacks happened? Amnesty International’s satellite images confirm that indeed a massacre took place, and as many as 2,000 people are dead. Yet your army wastes time contesting the numbers.
Whether 150 or 2,000, we’d like to hear from you on your government’s plans to secure the region and to bear witness to the loss of lives in Baga. We have seen a clear incompetency in handling matters of national interest. In the context of existing ethnic and religious fault lines, silence only says that Nigeria’s government does not care about the victims and is not dealing with the insurgency.
True, the global community has also failed to maintain pressure on a government that seems ambivalent about fulfilling its constitutional role to secure the lives and properties of its citizens.
With more than 150,000 people who have fled their homes, swelling camps within Nigeria and overwhelming border communities, it seems the only hope to see you act is international outrage. It was this that finally forced you to address the nation and the world after the Chibok abductions. It was only then that you reached out to other countries and, with their help, agreed a plan for a regional security force to secure the porous borders between Nigeria, Niger and Chad where Boko Haram roams undeterred.
Perhaps, had international pressure been sustained last year, a multi-regional force would have been based in Baga as planned. Perhaps it would have been strong enough to repel Boko Haram when the militants attacked on 3 January. Perhaps 2,000 lives could have been saved.
But Isis struck and the world moved on, leaving a small national military unit to stand between hundreds of armed militants and a town of 10,000 people. We now know what happened. The world has seen pictures of bodies still strewn around the forest and river where they died.
If these deaths do not generate the attention, outcry and action that they ought to, we can only prepare the ground for more bodies because Boko Haram shows no sign of relenting. The insurgents can be defeated but first you must decide if the lives of Nigerians are worth it.
Break the silence, President. Call for global attention and support to prevent further loss of life – and it must be said – silence those who think that African leaders care nothing for their people.
Be the voice for the thousands of innocent people who have died and the millions who yearn for peace. They have the right to rebuild their communities and claim their place in the unfolding.

Why Are Nigerians Forced To Choose Between Jonathan And Buhari - Etcetera

Singer turned social media critic and writer, Etcetera is back again. This time, he focuses on the upcoming election and why Nigerians are being forced to choose between presidential candidates, Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari.

Hear him;
“In Nigeria, there are three classes of people: The Masses, The Politicians, and The Rich. The masses are the puppets, the politicians the hand that controls the puppets and the rich the hand that controls the politicians. The politicians have the system totally rigged in their favour.

"They have made it compulsory for the masses to vote from a list selected by them knowing that as blind as the masses are, they may never realise they can actually have a choice. In the upcoming presidential election, the masses have been given no choice but to choose between two candidates forced upon them by the politicians.”

“What if Buhari and Goodluck Jonathan are not exactly what the masses want? Are we going to have recourse when they fail as they always do, to honour their promises.

“There seems to be a spot in every Nigerian, a soft spot in our consciousness like the one in a baby’s head, which, if pressed or stroked in the right way, reduces us to giggling children with mouths full of candy. That spot is what I call a “Mumu Button.” And any person that finds and presses that Mumu button in Nigerians is on the road to wealth and power. As a youth, my faith in this nation is disappearing like a fart in a wind storm."

"“I have seen that even the most intelligent and educated Nigerians, when you press their mumu button, they turn into docile drooling puppy dogs, panting happily. Obviously, every politician in this country understands this, but for some reason, the masses don’t.

“My mumu button has been pressed many times too, but unlike many people, mine has become calloused due to misuse and abuse. But since I realised what the politicians are, they can’t press my mumu button anymore.
“I see politicians as conmen, I see them like those Ebonyi State boys trying to sell fake wrist watches to me in traffic, I see them like pastors. They are always too eager to sell their plans and schemes, to convince us that their government will bring “change,” and if we support their candidates, we will be led out of the darkness into light. And somehow in every election, an amazing number of us fall for it. We keep buying the scam over and over.
With Buhari and Jonathan, we have again swallowed the same con hook, line, sinker, rod, reel, creel, boat, motor, and even the river, down our throats like a starving dog would gulp a piece of rotten meat without sniffing it first. Why does Buhari want to be president so badly? Who is really financing Goodluck Jonathan’s N21 billion campaign and at what cost to the nation if he gets reelected? When will the masses pull their numbers on the streets and demand for the simple things of life?

“Are we ever going to stop rolling over our backs with our legs wide open like a prostitute waiting for her customer? With everything we see in the media, to be a successful politician depends on talk, or more precisely, smooth talk. The masses love smooth talk. It lulls us into some kind of euphoric state. With smooth talks, they have convinced most Nigerians that night is day, bad is good, and most recently, stealing is not the same as corruption.

“It saddens me whenever I see a group of people arguing that Buhari is better suited for the presidency than Goodluck Jonathan or vise versa. Therein lies the con of all: can’t we see that both candidates are being financed by the same group of individuals? That’s right, the very same people. Whoever becomes the president on February 14 is still their choice."

“The elections are nothing but theatrical productions to keep us distracted and pacified so we won’t revolt and demand better government. To some of you naive souls who are still under the spell of all the jangbajantis they taught you in school, let me explain what election truly is in Nigeria: the next president will only get into office by playing ball with the likes of the Dangotes and other power brokers, and by telling you and me what we want to hear.

“I have heard things like, his running mate is a pastor, he is holy and credible. My friend, by the time anybody gets to be presidential material, he’s been bought ten times over."

According to Gistreel;

"There Should Be Limit To Freedom Of Speech" - Pope Francis On Charlie Hebdo Attack

Pope Francis has said there are limits to the freedom of expression – and that anyone who swears at his mother deserves a punch.
Francis spoke about the Paris attacks while on his way to the Philippines, where around 1,500 Muslims protested yesterday against the depictions of the Prophet in the satirical French magazine Charlie Hebdo.
He said that freedom of speech and expression are fundamental human rights however he added that he believes there should be limits to offending and ridiculing the faiths and beliefs of others.
By way of example, he referred to Alberto Gasparri, who organises his trips and was standing by his side on board the papal plane.
“If my good friend Dr Gasparri says a curse word against my mother, he can expect a punch,” Francis said while pretending to throw a punch in his direction.
He added: “It’s normal. You cannot provoke. You cannot insult the faith of others. You cannot make fun of the faith of others.”
Many people around the world have defended the right ofCharlie Hebdo to publish inflammatory cartoons of the Prophet Mohamed in the wake of the massacre at its Paris offices and the following attack on a kosher supermarket, in which three gunmen killed 17 people in total.
But recently the Vatican and four prominent French imams issued a joint declaration that denounced the attacks but also urged the media to treat religions with respect.
Francis, who has urged Muslim leaders in particular to speak out against Islamic extremism, went a step further when asked by a French journalist about whether there were limits when freedom of expression meets freedom of religion.
Francis insisted that it was an “aberration” to kill in the name of God and said religion can never be used to justify violence.
But he said there was a limit to free speech when it concerned offending someone’s religious beliefs.
In the wake of the Paris attacks, the Vatican has sought to downplay reports that it is a potential target for Islamic extremists, saying it is being vigilant but has received no specific threat.
