Forget wardrobe, the total allowances of Senators, lawmakers will shock you

Although many Nigerians still can’t wrap their heads around N506,600 per annum as wardrobe allowance for Senators, it gets worse.
A Punch Newspaper report reveals that the lawmakers receive a total allowance of N18,642,880 on annual basis.
Each senator earns a salary of N2,026,400 per annum, therefore the allowance received is nine times more than the annual salary.
Senators as well as members of the House of Representatives are entitled to 19 different allowances.
These allowances are specified in the Remuneration Package for Political, Public and Judicial Office Holders prepared by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission.
The allowances fall in different categories such as; vehicle maintenance and fuelling; domestic staff, entertainment, utilities, personal assistant, constituency, wardrobe, house maintenance, newspapers, recess, accommodation, furniture, severance, tour duty, estacode, special assistant, security, legislative aide and medical.
Cumulatively, the 107 senators receive N1,994,788,160 as allowances.
Members of the House of Representatives on the other hand, receive annual allowances that are about eight times higher than their basic annual salaries.
The annual salary of a House member is N1,985,212.50, while the annual allowances add up to N15,286,135.25.
In essence, the 358 members of the House (excluding the speaker and the deputy speaker) get N5,472,436,419.5 annually in allowances.
